Stephen E. Murphy and Peña also worked on the show as consultants.

Law enforcement career

Murphy's start in law enforcement came as an intern at age 18, with the Bluefield, West Virginia Police Department. From there, he joined the Mercer County Sheriff's Department, before accepting a full-time job as a patrolman in Norfolk, Virginia. He joined the DEA in 1987 and served until 2013.

His character was played by actor Boyd Holbrook in the Netflix TV series Narcos.[2] Murphy and Peña worked as consultants on the show[1][3] and made a cameo appearance in the last episode of Season 2, "Al Fin Cayó!"[4]

He was also portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard in the movie Loving Pablo, as DEA agent Shepherd.
