The Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar is a Martyrs' Monument located at Chowhatta in Sylhet City.[1] It is the Central Martyr Monument of Sylhet Division.[2]

Architects

The main architect of the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar is Subhajit Choudhury, a faculty member of the Department of Architecture at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Additional architects are Koushik Saha, Sipaul Bar Choudhury, Dheeman Chandra Biswas, and Jishnu Kumar Das contribute as assistant architects in its construction.[3]

History

In 1988, in the Chouhatta area of Sylhet city, the Martyrs' Monument was constructed through the initiative of the freedom fighters late Yamin Choudhury (Bir Bikram), Iftikhar Hossain Shamim, Choudhury Shadruddin, and Shawkat Ali. Initially used as a general Martyrs' Monument, it later gained the status of the Central Martyrs' Monument in Sylhet. On February 22, 2013, a group of protesters vandalized the Central Martyrs' Monument in Sylhet. Subsequently, with the efforts of the then Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, three crore taka was allocated for the reconstruction of the Martyrs' Monument under the management of Sylhet City Corporation. On December 10, 2014, Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith inaugurated the reconstructed Martyrs' Monument through the offering of floral tributes.[3]
