The Independent Group is the name of the group of Independents of whom grouped together in early 2018, and would later collaborate with the Liberal Democrats to form an administration of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council between 2019 and 2023.
History
The group was led by Mary Lanigan from its original inception in May 2019 until she lost her seat on the Borough Council in the 2023 Local Elections which saw Lanigan,[1] alongside four others in the Independent Group, loose their seats.
The group is not officially registered with the UK Electoral Commission, although is recognised by Redcar and Cleveland as an official group of Independents within the council, of whom act and vote on the same matters, and vote for a collective leader, as was seen in the aftermath of the 2019 election, and the formation of the 2019-23 Liberal Democrat / Independent Coalition in Redcar and Cleveland.[2]
