Upfield railway station is the terminus of the suburban electrified Upfield line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the northern Melbourne suburb of Campbellfield. A station at the site opened on 8 October 1889 as North Campbellfield. It was closed on 13 July 1903, was reopened on 5 March 1928, and was closed again on 5 May 1956. On 17 August 1959 the current station opened as Upfield.[4][5]

History

The station originally on the site opened when the railway from Coburg was extended to Somerton in 1889.[4] The current station was opened on 17 August 1959, especially to serve workers at the nearby Ford factory, with the line from Fawkner to Somerton being reopened and electrified as far as Upfield.[4][5] The name of the station comes from the open country in the area at the time of its 1959 opening.[6][7]

During 1963–1964, the present station building was provided.[8] In 1965, flashing light signals were provided at the Barry Road level crossing, located at the up end of the station.[4]

A train stabling yard, which was provided in 1997, is located north of the station.[9] Also in that year, a signal panel was provided.[4] In 1998, boom barriers were provided at the Barry Road level crossing, as part of the upgrade works along the Upfield line.[10]

During 2002–2003, the station was refurbished[11] and, in December 2007, Upfield was upgraded to a premium station.[12] In 2011, an extra stabling siding (Siding "A") was provided.[4]

Under the PTV Network Development Plan, released in 2013, the section of the line between Upfield and Roxburgh Park was to be reinstated, and would include a flyover across the North East standard gauge line. That would allow V/Line services to Seymour to operate via Upfield, and would facilitate the eventual electrification of the line to Wallan.[13]

On 30 June 2019, the Upfield signal panel was abolished, and control was transferred to Metrol.[14]

Upfield has one side platform. It is served by Upfield line trains.[15]

Broadmeadows Bus Service operates two routes via Upfield station, under contract to Public Transport Victoria:

  •  531 : to North Coburg[16]
  •  532 : Craigieburn stationBroadmeadows station[17]

Dysons operates one bus route to and from Upfield station, under contract to Public Transport Victoria:

  •  540 : to Broadmeadows station[18]
