Vanessa Forero (née Chapman) is an English-Colombian singer-songwriter, composer, musician, and author. She has also be known professionally as Vanessa James, particularly during her time as a keyboard player in the touring band Starling.[1][2][3][4][5]
Forero is the youngest daughter of Marina Chapman, a woman best known for her claim of being raised by monkeys in the Colombian jungle in the 1950s, Forero was born and brought up with one sibling, a sister in Bradford from the 1980s. Forero went on to attend Leeds School of Music where she gained her degree in composition. She spent two years working on a book draft, documenting her mother's early life and collaborated with ghostwriter Lynne Barrett-Lee to prepare for the publication of the memoir The Girl With No Name[6] Mother and daughter both appeared on BBC Breakfast Time in 2013.[7]
Forero married a pastor's son when she was 19 years of age. They separated fifteen years later and she began supporting herself while living in Brighton in southern England, composing music for television advertisements which included Audi.
In January 2024, Colombian based Forero appeared on the feature length first episode of the new documentary adventure series, Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild on Channel 5 that was first broadcast in the United Kingdom.[8][2][9][10][11][12]
Forero currently resides in an "idyllic" isolated cabin that she built and created for herself, on a secluded mountain side in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a region of Colombia, in the middle of a jaguar reserve.[13] She was able to fund the cabin construction from her successful international music career, purchasing the building plot for £20,000. She has installed a home recording studio with electricity and Wi-Fi access. Her studio is home to an extensive collection of musical instruments which she plays. Today she spends part of her time concentrating on her interest in colombian-chicka music.[14][2][15]
