Varun Ghosh is a politician and barrister who has been selected by the Western Australian Labor Party to fill the vacancy caused by the forthcoming resignation of Pat Dodson from the Senate. He is aligned with the Western Australian Right faction.[1]

Political career

Ghosh has been described as having "longstanding political connections" in the Western Australian branch of the Labor Party, having previously served as the president of WA Young Labor in the mid-2000s. He is also reported as having legally represented the party before.[1]

At the 2019 Australian federal election, Ghosh was a Senate candidate in Western Australia for the Australian Labor Party, in the fifth position on the ticket. He was not elected.[2][3]

In December 2023, Ghosh was selected as the Western Australian Labor Party's nominee to replace Pat Dodson in the Senate.[4] Dodson, who has been diagnosed with cancer, has announced that he intends to retire on 26 January 2024.[5]

Personal life

Ghosh was born in Canberra, Australia, to Indian-born parents, who were both doctors.[1] Moving to Perth in 1997 at age 17, he studied arts and law at the University of Western Australia, and later studied at Cambridge University on the Frank Downing Law Scholarship.[6] As a barrister, he operates out of the Francis Burt Chambers. As of 2023, he has been an adjunct lecturer at the University of Western Australia.[1]
