Wakefield Crossing Shopping Center is a grocery-anchored shopping center located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The center contains a number of large and small businesses, including grocery stores, restaurants, and more. In February 2023, the shopping center was sold to the Washington, D.C.-based firm Granite Canyon Partners for US$14.3 million, and currently maintain the center.

History

The grocery-anchored shopping center[1] was constructed in 2001, with a total area of 75,927 sq ft (7,053.8 m2).[2] Its location was ideal, being situated in the Raleigh submarket, within 30 miles of Research Triangle Park, UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University, NC State University, and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.[2] In the same year, a Food Lion would be built in the center, taking up about 50% of the gross leasable area[2] and anchoring the center, followed by Tuesday Morning soon after.[1]

On February 16, 2023, the center's second anchor store Tuesday Morning would announce its closure after its parent company filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.[3] On February 28, 2023,[2] the Blackstone Inc. real estate investment trust "Preferred Apartment Communities" sold the center through JLL for US$14.3 million to the Washington, D.C.-based firm Granite Canyon Partners[1] would once again sell the center to Wakefield Wellons, LLC.[2] At the time of the 2023 sale, some other larger tenants in the center included Subway, "Dante's Italiano", "Wakefield Tavern", "Wake Health Medical Group",[2] "El Tapatio", and "D's Bottle Shop",[1] and a McDonald's and "Town Hall Burger & Beer" in the outparcels.[1] Annually, the center has an average of 791,000 visits per year.[2]

List of businesses

Since the closure of Tuesday Morning, the center now only has two major businesses in the main parcels: being Food Lion[4] and Subway,[5] with a McDonald's[6] and Exxon located in the outparcels.[7]

The center also houses a number of small businesses, including "Amy Nails",[8] with "ManeCave Barber Studio"[9] in the outparcels. More notable small businesses are listed below.

D's Bottle Shop & Craft Beer College

D's Bottle Shop & Craft Beer College is a beer store and wine bar, specializing in craft beer.[10] The establishment is owner and operated by Kelly and Nathan Kreel, with Nathan being a home brewer for twenty years before both founding the store.[10] It hosts a collection of 400 brews from 140 brewers from a number of locations.[11] The business occasionally hosts event nights, fundraisers,[12] and celebrates a few winter holidays including Oktoberfest annually.[13][14]

Dante's Italiano

Dante's Italiano is an Italian restaurant, serving New York-style Italian cuisine.[15] The New York-native restaurant owner created the establishment out of his love for the type of cuisine.[15] According to restaurant reviewer Robin Jarvis, the interior of the restaurant is described as "cozy",[15][16] with its ambiance "part casual and part one-step-up, without becoming too formal".[15] The establishment is known for its meatballs, pasta, pizza, salad, antipasti, calzones, and stromboli,[15] and occasionally hosts live music[17] and half-price wine nights.[18]

Wakefield Tavern is an tavern founded in 2010 by the current owners Anthony and Joelle Scalese,[19] but would only receive its certificate of incorporation about two years later on 20 November 2012.[20]

The tavern serves a variety of food and drinks, being notable for their fried prawns, corned beef, cheesesteaks, and ice tea.[21] It is open during brunch, lunch, and dinner hours,[22] and holds weekly events: including live music, trivia nights, and 'Wine Wednesdays'.[22] Annually, a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness is also held, in memory of two of the owners families members,[19] and previously a Star Wars Day fundraiser and food drive.[23]

Crime

While crime is often low in and around the center,[24] non-insignificant crimes have taken place: including a double homicide in the parking lot in June 2020,[24] and an armed robbery at the Subway in August 2023.[25]
