Ziad Sakr (Arabic: زياد صقر; born July 8, 1999, in Tanta, Egypt) is an Egyptian professional squash player. He is the 2012 British Junior Open champion[1] and a former Trinity College squash team captain (Bantams), class of 2021. Sakr won the 2018 College Squash Association (CSA) National Team Championship "A" Division, securing the 17th[2] title for Trinity College.[3] Recognized as a true student-athlete, he was honored by Trinity College in 2021[4]

Squash Career

In juniors, Ziad Sakr won the 2012 Under-13 British Junior Open title[1] and secured podium finishes in the 2014 British Junior Open Under-15 (3rd place)[5] and Under-17 (3rd place) categories. In his last tournament in juniors before college, he finished in the top-9 in the under-19 category at the Squash World Junior Open held in Poland.[6]

During his time at Trinity College, Sakr was a tri-captain in the 2020–21 season and a three-year starter.[7] In team competition, Sakr won the college squash national team championship title in 2018[8] and three NESCAC championships. Sakr's individual achievements include a 1x CSA All-American second team title and a CSA National Singles Championship Molloy "B" Division title. He was honored with the 2019 All-NESCAC First Team[9] and twice with NECAC All-Sportsmanship recognition.[10] In his senior year, Trinity College recognized him as a true student-athlete for his dedication both on and off the court. He was acknowledged in the same article by their head coach, Paul Assaiante, as one of the standout players originating from Egypt and among the best players in the history of Trinity College with only 9 losses in his college squash career.[4]

He finishes his college career with a total of 42 wins and only 9 losses.

Recognized as a touring professional in March 2015, Sakr temporarily paused his professional squash career two months after starting in 2015 to attend college. Sakr made a triumphant return to the professional circuit after 7 years.[12] Starting at #800 in January 2023, his comeback was marked by swift progress, achieving a Highest World Ranking (HWR) in the Official Men's Squash World Ranking of #183 as of November 2023,[13]

Education

Sakr earned a Bachelor of Science degree with faculty honors in Computer science,[14] minoring in Models and Data, from Trinity College, class of 2021.
