不確定。傳統上認為與 (nḗkhō, “游泳”)（源自原始印歐語 (“漂，游泳”)）有關。或者，如果其本義為“岬角”，則可能類似原始日耳曼語 (“岬角”)和保加利亞語 (nos, “鼻；岬角”)，是派生自原始印歐語 (“鼻”)；只有 -s- 不是希臘語族常見成分，來源依舊不明。還有說法將其與拉丁語聯繫起來，不過這種相似可能只是巧合。也可能是借自前希臘語。
