源自原始蒙古語 。對比喀喇汗語 (uymā/oymā, “毛氈靴”)，可能派生自原始突厥語 (“擠”)，可能與哈薩克語 (ūiyq, “襪子”)和其他類似突厥語族詞同源[1]（如果不是源自）。[2]
另對比滿語 (fomoci, “毛氈靴”)和原始薩莫耶德語 (“靴”)（一般認為派生自原始突厥語 (“鞋，拖鞋”)）。
