詞源

有說法稱借自亞拉姆語 (pōlā, “大豆”)，此說法的支撐是其他種豆類植物 (ḥimmaṣ, “鷹嘴豆”), (bāqillāʔ), (turmus, “羽扇豆”), (ḵullar), (julubbān, “山黧豆”), (faṣfaṣ, “苜蓿”)也是借自亞拉姆語，雖然有例外 (ʕadas, “小扁豆”)。源頭為原始閃米特語 *pūl- (“豆，玉米，種子，穀物，小塊”)；可能與埃及語 (“顯現”)、 (“作物生長季”)有關。
