不確定。以線形文字B書寫的邁錫尼希臘語文本中出現了名字 (a-ki-re-u)[1](主格)/ (a-ki-re-we)[2](與格),一般認為和本詞是同一個名字。[3]
古今皆有人推測與 (ákhos, “痛苦;悲傷”)和 (laós, “人”)有關,因为阿喀琉斯给人们带来的悲伤是《伊利亚特》的中心主题。[4][5][6]
