早期女真語的現代構擬 (大概為 *Jörcen),[1]，漢語古籍中作 (Zhúlǐzhēn)，中古漢語構擬作 Trjuwk-li-tsyin，契丹語轉寫作 Julisen,[2] 受滿語 Jurcit[1]和蒙古語 (žürčid)影響。[3] 瓦基达認為派生自原始通古斯語詞彙，意為“馴鹿人”，與哈巴羅夫斯克和庫頁島的奥罗奇人（Oroch）同源。[4]
