源自原始芬蘭-烏戈爾語 (“大腦”)，與芬蘭語 , 愛沙尼亞語 同源。[1]對比芬蘭語 (“額頭”), 茲梁科米語 (vodź, “前面”), 彼爾姆科米語 (odź, “前部”)，派生自假想的芬-烏戈爾語詞根*ońća[2][3]，但這些詞如今認為是通過不同的路徑，從原始印歐語 (“前面；額頭”)借入。由Ferenc Toldy於18-19世紀的匈牙利語改革中創造。
