Fortescue 認為此詞源自原始愛斯基摩語 (“手的邊緣”)，指的是到第五根手指後出現的東西。另外，Dorais 和 Starostin 亦認為此為繼承自原始因紐特語 ，源自原始愛斯基摩語 ，兩者的意義皆為「跨過」，指在達到第五個數字後跨到下一隻手上。
