The 1888 Florida gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 1888. Democratic nominee Francis P. Fleming defeated Republican nominee V. J. Shipman with 60.37% of the vote.
Republican candidate Volney Job Shipman was a Union Army officer who mustered out due to injury and settled in Iowa before moving to Florida for health considerations. He established the town of Lawtey, Florida and was involved in agricultural pursuits. His fortunes declined due to a great freeze.[1]
