2023 in athletics is a year of track and field, highlighted by the main event of 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, 40 years after the very first edition in 1983.
World records
Indoor
- Armand Duplantis jumped at 6.22 m, on 25 February at the All Star Perche in Clermont-Ferrand, his 6th pole vault world record in a row.[1]
- Ryan Crouser threw the shot put at a distance of 23.38 m during the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho, on 18 February, but it was later considered as "IRM".[2]
- Femke Bol had a world best performance in the 500 metres in 1:05.63 minutes on 4 February,[3] beating Olesya Krasnomovets's indoor time from 2006 and also Taťána Kocembová's outdoor time from 1984. She then broke the world record for the 400 metres in 49.26 seconds on 19 February, beating Jarmila Kratochvílová's record from 1982.[4]
- Lamecha Girma (ETH), 7:23.81 on 3,000 m, 15 Feb 2023 at Liévin.[5]
Outdoor
- Ryan Crouser, 23.56 m in Los Angeles, at USATF Grand Prix, (shot put world record).[6]
- Kimberly García (PER) on 35 kilometres race walk, at the Dudinska 50 in Dudince, Slovakia, on 25 March 2023.
- María Pérez (ESP), walked 2:37:15 on the same 35 km, set on 21 May 2023 at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Poděbrady, Czech Republic.[7]
- Faith Kipyegon, 3:49.11 in the 1500 m, set on 2 June 2023 at Golden Gala in Florence, Italy and 14:05.20 in the 5000 m, set on 9 June 2023 at the Meeting de Paris in Paris, France.[8][9] Kipyegon ran 4:07.64 for the mile, set on 21 July 2023 at Monaco, breaking the old world record by over 4 seconds.
- The United States set a world record in the mixed 4 × 400 metres relay of 3:08.80 during the 2023 World Championships final.[10]
