Baby Tower, also known as abandoned infant tower or baby girl tower, is an architectural structure in Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places in ancient China.[1] Usually it is a small tower-shaped building made of bricks and stones. There is a small hole on the top, which is used to abandon dead infants, disabled infants and female infants. The Baby Tower is described as a donation from wealthy people in the countryside at that time, used to prevent residents from cruelly drowning babies with their own hands. The pagoda architectural style is intended to suppress the grievances of babies with gods and Buddhas to avoid revenge.[2]
In addition to poverty, some opinions believe that this is the gender selection of infants caused by the traditional patriarchal clan society in the southeast coast of China, and is related to the significant gender imbalance in China.
