BoBoiBoy Movie 2 is a 2019 Malaysian Malay-language computer-animated superhero comedy film produced by Animonsta Studios. Directed by Nizam Razak, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Anas Abdul Aziz, it is the standalone sequel to BoBoiBoy: The Movie (2016) and first season of TV series BoBoiBoy Galaxy. The film follows BoBoiBoy and his friends as they fight an ancient villain named Retak’ka, who plans to absorb BoBoiBoy's elemental powers.

BoBoiBoy Movie 2 was simultaneously released in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Singapore on 8 August 2019. The Vietnamese dub of the film was released in Vietnam on 30 August 2019.[3]

Plot

Gopal and BoBoiBoy try to retrieve a Power Sphere, EggaBot among a penguin monster's eggs. Gopal's carelessness causes the Power Sphere to land in Adu Du and Probe, before Fang and Yaya rescue the Power Sphere. BoBoiBoy rescues Adu Du and Probe before leaving.

A gang of alien miners found an alien sealed inside crystal, escaping with a remnant of his powers and introduces himself as Retak'ka, the first master of the Elements, ordering the miners to locate BoBoiBoy and TAPOPS for Power Spheres in exchange for crystals. BoBoiBoy and his friends land near Tok Aba's Kokotiam where Papa Zola meets Mama Zila with their daughter, Pipi Zola. BoboiBoy invites Fang for dinner at Aba's home whereas the Zolas stop Adu Du and Probe from getting EggaBot. Koko Ci broadcasts an emergency transmission, telling them to go to Planet Quabaq after Retak'ka attacked the TAPOPS Station. BoBoiBoy has Ochobot go there to investigate.

At TAPOPS Station, Retak'ka confronts BoBoiBoy, telling him that splitting only makes him weaker, absorbing his Solar, Thunderstorm, Cyclone and Thorn elements. Gopal rescues BoBoiBoy before Ochobot urgently takes them to Quabaq while Koko Ci tells BoBoiBoy to find Hang Kasa. There, they land by an acidic swamp.

BoBoiBoy and Ochobot scramble to retrieve the message before leaving the sinking ship. They were ambushed by Kang Kongs, sloth monsters passive towards light. As Retak'ka stole his Solar element, BoBoiBoy tries to fend them off using Blaze. Hang Kasa rescues them and takes them to his camp offering to prepare them against Retak'ka.

Meanwhile, Kaizo had rescued Fang, Yaya, Ying, Koko Ci and Tarung from the TAPOPS Station on board his ship and tracked the miners. He and Fang disembark on Planet Gur'latan, noticing that Retak'ka killed all their guards in his plan to absorb energy from various planets. Tracing the miners to Planet Bayugan where Retak'ka plans to upgrade his Wind element, Ying warns the inhabitants of the threat.

The miners discover BoBoiBoy on Quabaq and Retak'ka absorbs Planet Rimbara's energy while Kaizo's team evacuate the Cendawa Tribe on board their ship. BoBoiBoy and Gopal were forced to pay training fees much to Gopal's dismay, so Kasa claims BoBoiBoy Quake as debt and puts them in crystal. The Zolas discover that Kasa fixed Ochobot’s databank in his technology-filled house, revealing that Koko Ci told them to go to Planet Quabaq to find a way against Retak'ka. Kasa then reveals that he was the original master of the Crystal Element and Retak'ka's old friend who discovered him on the landfill Planet Gugura, where they gained powers through Power Spheres. Retak'ka stole five more Elements and desired Kasa's Crystal power, so he drained his Elements through Ochobot, sealing him within crystal. Retak'ka arranges to meet at Earth informed that it contains the seven Elements he needs from Fang, Yaya and Ying which he captured.

Kasa arrives to fight Retak'ka, and Pipi frees BoBoiBoy and Gopal with EggaBot. Retak'ka overpowers Kasa only for BoBoiBoy to intercept with Blaze. Noticing BoBoiBoy in danger, Gopal joins the fight with Ochobot. The Zolas fend off the miners, rescuing Fang, Yaya and Ying. While Retak'ka prepares to finish off BoBoiBoy, Kasa insists on returning Quake to BoBoiBoy to encourage him to stop his adversary who then absorbs his Crystal Element and takes the blow.

Realizing splitting makes him weaker, BoBoiBoy fuses into FrostFire. Gopal provides Ochobot to retrieve Quake from Retak'ka supported by Fang, Yaya and Ying. Refusing to accept defeat, Retak'ka destroys a nearby dam. BoBoiBoy freezes Retak'ka as Glacier, obtains his remaining Elements and launches him to space as Supra in retaliation, collapsing into the river before his friends rescue him.

The next day, Zila scolds Zola for taking Pipi with him as the Cendawa Tribe rebuild the Earth. Kasa passes down the responsibility of holding the Elements to BoBoiBoy.

In a post-credits scene, Maskmana gives ArmoBot to BoBoiBoy's father Amato for repair, asking if he should be helping BoBoiBoy.

Production

The film's director Nizam Razak stated that the process of filmmaking for this second film is faster than the first film and only took one year to be finished. They enforced a 12-month deadline to see if they can make a film without jeopardising the quality or the storyline of the animation.[4] He admitted there is pressure in completing the movie on time but his production team of 100 people managed to do that within that time. They used better technology such as Redshift and comprehensive simulation method[5] even though the cost will be higher to give the best quality to the audience.[6] If the reaction to this film is positive, they plan to make movies consistently, with a new film every one year or every one-and-a-half year.[4]

Release

Before the release of BoBoiBoy: The Movie in 2016, Nizam Razak stated that they already have their ideas for the second film.[10]

Initially, this would be the first Malaysian film to be released simultaneously in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and Vietnam. However, the Vietnamese release was postponed to 30 August in order to allow time to produce a full Vietnamese dub version.[11] For the Indonesian market, it is distributed by CBI Pictures while for the Vietnamese market, the film is distributed by CGV Cinemas and Mani Entertainment.[12]

There were requests to release the film in Thailand and the Philippines, as well as plans to target South Korea, India and China for future releases.[13]

Comic adaptation

This movie has been adapted into a comic titled BoBoiBoy Movie 2: Evolusi Kuasa.
