Terry Blade is an American singer-songwriter based in Chicago, Illinois.[1] Since his 2020 debut, Blade has received over 140 awards, nominations and honors for his music. In 2020, Blade's first release, The Unloveable, received a singer-songwriter nomination at the 11th Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[2] His 2021 debut studio album, American Descendant of Slavery, the Album, was named in the Archives of African American Music & Culture "February 2021 Black Music Releases of Note".[3] In 2023, Blade's third studio album, Ethos: Son of a Sharecropper, was nominated for Album of the Year: Folk/Americana at the Josie Music Awards.[4] The album's single, Won't Be Around, garnered Blade an inaugural nomination at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards[5] along with a second career nomination at the 14th Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[6][7]

Career

2020–2021: The Unloveable and Early Releases

On April 3, 2020, Blade debuted his acoustic demo The Unloveable.[8][9] The release premiered at No. 14 on the iTunes R&B/Soul Daily Charts in Italy.[10] The song later earned Blade a singer-songwriter nomination at the 11th Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[2] The Unloveable appeared as the opening track on Blade's subsequently released six-track EP demo, Misery, which was released on May 8, 2020.[11] The EP included songs featured on the UK's BBC Radio WM[12] and Australia's RTRFM.[13]

Later that year, Blade recorded a rendition of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's That's Alright Mama which, along with The Unloveable, received a nomination for Best Acoustic/Folk Song at the May 2020 Tracks Music Awards.[14] Blade's rendition was listed among the Top 10 Blues Songs on Broadjam[15] and reached No. 1 on the iTunes Blues Daily Charts in France.[16] On Juneteenth 2020, Blade released a rendition of Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit, which was listed at No. 5 on Broadjam's Top 10 Jazz Songs.[17][18]

On November 13, 2020, Blade released his A cappella single The "Karen" Blues.[19] He described the single as "a social protest song that speaks frankly and directly about contemporary racism in America."[20] The song caught the attention of musician Adeem the Artist who described it as "witty and biting" and featured Blade in Country Queer's Buried Treasure column.[21] Alt77 Alternative Music Blog wrote, "The novelty about this tune is that it’s sung in a baritone voice, seemingly as part of an old-school barbershop quartet, one of the oldest forms of pop music. It’s playful, the vocals are pitch-perfect and the sound seems to resonate off of the pavement in the sweetest way...So much so, that when lyrics about racial discrimination are sung, they hit like a sledgehammer."[22]

2021–2022: American Descendant of Slavery, the Album

On February 5, 2021, Blade released his debut studio album[23] American Descendant of Slavery, the Album.[24][25] Blade described the 19-track release as an ethnographic-musical album "with a focus on the intersectionality of his social and cultural identity as a gay Black-American descendant of slaves."[26] The album incorporated public domain audio recordings of formerly enslaved African-Americans curated from the archives of the American Folklife Center through the Citizen DJ Project of the United States Library of Congress.[25][26][27]

The album was named in the Archives of African American Music & Culture's "February 2021 Black Music Releases of Note" alongside R&B/Soul releases by Jose James, Joshua Henry, Kelly Rowland, Nat Turner Rebellion, Pink Sweats, The Chi-Lites, The Jacksons, and Trippie Redd.[3] The album also received an accolade from Something Else! Reviews, which ranked it second on its "Best of 2021 Rock, Pop and R&B"—a list that included albums by Alan Clark, Joseph Williams, Peter Frampton, Tony Kaye, and Yes.[28] Something Else! Reviews wrote, "American Descendant of Slavery is an unflinchingly powerful debut from Chicago-based artist Terry Blade. Combining folk, rock, and soul elements, Blade delivers 19 songs that confront racism, LGBTQ+ and social-justice issues."[29]

The album and its lead single, Black Hurts, went on to win nineteen awards, including awards for Best Original Song and Best Black Music Video at the Munich Music Video Awards;[30][31] the Gold Medal of Excellence Award for Lyrics/Songwriting at the Global Music Awards;[32] and the Bronze Telly Award for Non-Broadcast-Craft:Use of Music.[33] Black Hurts peaked at No. 6 on Australia's RTRFM Daily Charts; reached No. 79 on Amazing Radio's USA Daily Charts; and finished at No. 99 on Australia's RTRFM Weekly Charts.[13]

2022–2023: Neo Queer and For You

On January 14, 2022, Blade released his second studio album Neo Queer.[34][35] The album won the Gold Medal of Excellence Award for Neo Soul at the Global Music Awards.[36] The album featured tracks such as All Ways and The Silent Treatment which peaked at No. 31 and No. 13, respectively, on Amazing Radio's UK Daily Charts.[37] The Silent Treatment was playlisted by Amazing Radio, reaching No. 6 on Amazing Radio's USA Daily Charts and No. 16 on Amazing Radio's USA Weekly Charts.[38] Tonemill music blog described the song as "a track the Soulquarians themselves would’ve been proud of."[39] The album's penultimate track, Blue, which featured British rapper Charlie J, went on to win awards for Best Original Song at the Europe Music Awards, Best Art Music Video at the Euro Video Song Awards, and Best Makeup at the Cyprus Music Video Festival.[40][41][42]

On March 4, 2022, Blade released his Soul single For You.[43][44] The single was featured on Amazing Radio's Mimi & Muziqueen broadcast and peaked at No. 42 on Amazing Radio's USA Daily Charts.[45][46][47] Speed on the Beat music blog described the single as "a ballad in the vein of D’Angelo, Prince and Serpentwithfeet, down to the intimate production on the song."[44] That same year, Frankie Francis featured Blade on his Amazing Afternoons broadcast on Amazing Radio UK along with artists Alt-J, Khruangbin, Wu-Lu, and others. [48]

2023–Present: Won't Be Around and Ethos: Son of a Sharecropper

On January 6, 2023, Blade released his Blues single Won't Be Around.[49][50][51] The single debuted in the Top 100 songs on the Spotify Local Pulse Charts for New York City and Houston.[52][53] [54] The single won Best Blues Recording at the 2023 Radio Music Awards;[55] won Best Song at the 2023 Music Video Awards;[56] and won an Honorable Mention Award at the 2023 Unsigned Only Music Competition in the Vocal Performance category.[57] The single was nominated at the 2023 Hollywood Independent Music Awards in the Americana/Roots category;[5] nominated at the 2023 InterContinental Music Awards in the Blues category;[5]and nominated at the 2023 14th Hollywood Music in Media Awards in the Music Video (Independent) category.[6][7][58]

Won't Be Around appeared on Blade's third studio album, Ethos: Son of a Sharecropper, which was released on February 3, 2023.[59][60] The album received a nomination for Best Folk/Americana Album of the Year at the 2023 Josie Music Awards,[4] and was featured on The Boot's "Most Wanted Music: 2023's Country and Americana Album Releases" along with album releases by Shania Twain, Margo Price, John-Allison Weiss, Elle King, and Mark Erelli.[61] The album also won the Gold Medal of Excellence Award for Americana at the Global Music Awards.[62] In its review of the album, Country Queer wrote, "It’s appropriate that Blade has used various strains of Americana to tell his stories because of his familial connection to sharecroppers. There’s nothing more ‘country’ than working the land, and while most people associate the old call-and-response field songs with gospel, they also gave rise to the country blues of folks like Charley Patton and Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter."[63]

Blade won Best Vocalist at the 2023 Music Video Awards and Best Gospel Recording at the 2023 Radio Music Awards for the album's closing Gospel blues track In My House.[64][65] On April 1, 2023, Apple Music 1 Host Hunter Kelly featured Blade and his album's fourth track, Rainbow Child, on Apple Music 1's Proud Radio show, naming both Blade and his track as the show's Proud Pick for April 2023.[66][67] Together, the album and its lead single, Won't Be Around, went on to win thirty-five awards in 2023.

On October 6, 2023, Blade released his Americana single Black Cowboys.[68][69] The single debuted in the Top 100 songs on the Spotify Local Pulse Charts for London and Los Angeles.[70][71] At the end of 2023, Blade ranked 1st in the United States in Blues and 12th globally in Neo Soul on Soundcloud.[72][73][74]

Artistry and influences

Blade possesses a baritone voice.[39][75] One critic wrote, "His voice can be as powerful as the Delta Blues, or as soulful as Sam Cooke. I don’t even think it’s a stretch to say I can hear a bit of Etta (I’d Rather Go Blind) or Nina (I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free) in his phrasing and tone."[49] Another critic wrote, "a feeling of foreboding is carried through the voice of Terry Blade. Like B.B. King or Conway Twitty, it demands attention, and holds the silence."[76]

Blade identifies as a multi-genre artist and cites Tracy Chapman, Meshell Ndegeocello, Nina Simone, Amos Lee, Ben Harper, and Anohni and the Johnsons as musical influences.[77][78][79] His music has been described as "emotive and introspective," a "unique fusion of R&B with Folk" and "genre fluid." [21][74][80] Phantom Power Music Blog wrote, "Listening to his work you’ll hear Blues, R&B, Soul and a bit of Americana."[1] In a 2023 interview with Lost in the Nordics music blog, Blade commented, "I’m based in Chicago. The city’s history with the Blues has heavily inspired and developed my sound."[77]

Personal life

Blade is originally from Washington, DC.[25][81] He identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.[82][83]
