The 1816 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on 30 November 1816 in order to elect the Governor of Virginia. Former Democratic-Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates from Montgomery County James Patton Preston defeated fellow Democratic-Republican nominee William J. Lewis and Linah Mimms in a Virginia General Assembly vote.^[1]

General election

On election day, 30 November 1816, Democratic-Republican nominee James Patton Preston won the election against his foremost opponent and fellow Democratic-Republican candidate William J. Lewis. Preston was sworn in as the 20th Governor of Virginia on 1 December 1816.^[2]
