  • A massive fire at a gas storage depot in the dock area of Dublin caused houses within a 2-mile (3.2 km) radius to be evacuated. Two people were injured.[26]
  • Up to 80 people died in a collision between two passenger trains 43 miles (69 km) west of Cotonou, Dahomey.[27]
  • California Indian Legal Services filed suit on behalf of a 5-year-old American Indian boy and his mother against Pinedale Elementary School in the Clovis Unified School District. The school's dress code prohibited the boy from wearing a traditional Indian hairstyle.[28]
  • A fire at Anchorage International Airport destroyed 3 airplanes and caused $10 million in damage.[29]

  • 19-year-old William Flowers, a student at Monmouth College in New Jersey, died of suffocation during a hazing ritual for pledges of the Delta Rho Chapter of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. The pledges were forced to dig "graves" in beach sand and lie in them, and Flowers' "grave" collapsed in on him. Flowers was the first black student to pledge for Zeta Beta Tau at Monmouth.[68][69] The national fraternity subsequently suspended the Monmouth chapter as a result of the incident.[69]
