Hello（最早可考于1826年），源自、（可考于1588年）。人们常认为这一的变体是由托马斯·爱迪生为电话中使用造出的，但其在电话发明的几十年前就已经有书面使用。

最终源自古英语的变体，如，其类似于现在使用的hey和hi。因此等价于和构成的复合词。用来唤起别人的注意。
