Chavar (Persian: چوار; also Romanized as Chavār, Chawār, and Chūār; also known as Kani Chavar (Persian: كانی چَوار) also Romanized as Kānī Chavār and Kānī Chawār)[3] is a city in the Central District of Chavar County, Ilam province, Iran, and serves as both capital of the county and of the district.[4] The city is populated by Arkavazi Kurds.[5]

At the 2006 National Census, its population was 5,574 in 1,080 households, when it was in the former Chavar District of Ilam County.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 5,775 people in 1,333 households.[7] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 5,831 people in 1,562 households.[2]

In November 2019, the district was separated from the county in the establishment of Chavar County, which was divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with Chavar as its capital and only city.[4]
